Creating images through carving wood is a physical process. Using steel chisels, the artist removes areas from the flat surface of a piece of wood. This process creates strong graphics and bold pattern. What is taken away will reveal the color of the paper. The artist draws directly on the wood, carves the image in reverse, rolls ink on the surface and takes a proof. This initial print serves as a guide for further developing the image. To print in color, a separate block is carved for each color and printed in sequence. Each must be printed in correct alignment; the blocks must be registered to each other and the paper. Sometimes the artist overlays transparent inks to create additional colors. Rainbow rolls and jigsaw blocks are other options for color printing. |
