| We travel through our lives leaving fragmented evidence in our wake. The traces accumulate behind us. Windward, Celebration and Looking Backwards are made from stitched postcards, which are tangible records of voices from the past, written in a medium that is falling out of use. The cards are stitched together with delicate thread to create interplay of air, space, light and implied motion. When held, the rectangular modules of the postcards slide, fall and fan out, revealing parts of their messages. The inclusions of multicolored stamps, the personal gestures of the penmanship and the addition of found objects build on the tactile nature of these pieces. In Looking Backwards, the color palette creates a somber mood. In Celebration, the combination of materials emphasizes the positive feeling of people sharing happy moments of their lives. Windward reveals a more sentimental response to the passage of time. Each of the sets is housed in an altered book. The artist published three copies of each book. One set was translated into Polish by Ania Gilmore, one set was translated into Arabic by Angela Stigliano and one set was printed in English in letterpress by the artist. | |||||||||||
